Day 1 - Trees!

We left Eugene about 9:30 in the morning, and I drove my Mercury for the last time. We gave it to Jamie's brother and his family. After that, we stocked up on supplies in Florence and said good-bye to familiar territory. The first part of the drive was mostly TREES. Driving through the Umpqua forest, we saw lots and lots of them. I found North Bend to be really beautiful, by the way. It had a different vibe than Florence.

We stopped briefly at Cape Sebastian for lunch. My gosh, the coast is just breathtaking!!

When we headed over to the border, we had to go through customs. Did you know that you can't bring cherries into California? Me neither.

Anyways, as we drove through the town of Smith River, I was fascinated to learn that it prided itself in being "The Easter lily capital of the world." Woot!

Californians are also obsessed with littering. If you toss that cigarette butt out the car, you'll get a $1000 fine. Don't mess with the highways!

We had planned to spend the night in Jedediah Smith National Park, but we got confused when going off the highway, so we chickened out and camped at Mill Creek in the Del Norte Coast Redwoods instead. Not too impressive, it kind of felt like being at Hendrick's Park sans hippies. We did have some crazy Canadian neighbors, though, that blasted the bass on their reggae music. This morning one of them was sleeping heavily among beer bottles on the picnic table.

Right now, we are enjoying a "healthy" breakfast at the Denny's in Eureka. Will post pictures soon, but we don't count on getting WiFi in the deep woods.
